Samudra unveiled the concept of "Kopra Vallam" at the Homestays & Rural Tourism Travel Meet 2015 held at Bolgatty Convention Centre, Kochi on 1st to 3rd September 2015.
"Kopra Vallam" is a unique business model that brings Boat Manufacturer (Samudra), Investors and Operations Company (Creeks and Lagoons) under a single umbrella. It is a day cruse package offered to Tourists who visit Kochi. Tourists are also provided the opportunity to experience Homestays in this package. In this business model, the investor is given the luxury of being away from the headache of operating and maintaining the vessel. The event attracted good response from the investors as well as the tourists.
Samudra Shipyard (P) Ltd, Aroor, Kerala, has won the Prestigious Marine Innovation Award 2012 instituted by JEC Paris, a leading international organization dedicated to promoting global composite industry. The award was received by Mr. S Arun, Executive Director, Samudra Shipyard on June 26th at Singapore during the 3 day JEC Asia 2012 event.
It was for commercializing the innovative technology of converting Kerala’s traditional House Boats known as “Kettuvalloms” used for cargo movement in olden days into sophisticated Luxury House Boats for the present day Tourism sector, that Samudra has won this International recognition along with Industrial Design Centre, IIT Bombay.
Samudra took up the ambitious project of converting the massive Wooden House Boats to Composites in 2004 with the technical collaboration of IIT Bombay, IIT Madras & IIT Kharagpur. The project was assisted by The Technology, Information Forecasting and Assessment Council (TIFAC) under the Department of Science & Technology, Govt of India. The Kerala Tourism Department and the end users were part of the monitoring committee.
The first product under the project was launched in the year 2005 and over a period of the next 5 years, Samudra successfully commissioned 17 reinforced composite House Boats, and exported one to Abu Dhabi, said Dr S Jeevan, CEO of Samudra Shipyard adding “we are proud that an international body like JEC has recognized our pioneering efforts in the field”
Samudra Shipyard has been building Boats for more than three decades. Under its innovative technology, wood is replaced with fiberglass while making Luxury Houseboats. “These scientifically designed and tested holiday cruise boats have become a benchmark in modern-day boat building” added Dr Jeevan. JEC Asia is the major annual event of the composite industry in the Asian region, where they think tanks and leading players of the world composite industry converges to showcase their latest innovations to prospective buyers, discuss the latest trends in the industry and engaged in fruitful business networking. The latest composite innovations in Aeronautics & aero space, Automotive, Construction & Infrastructure, Marine & Mass Transportation, Pipes, Tanks, Sports & Leisure, Wind energy etc were showcased at their very best at JEC Asia 2012.
